New Virus Similar to COVID-19 Identified in China!

Beijing: Researchers in China have identified a new virus similar to COVID-19. It is believed to pose a risk of transmission from animals to humans. This new virus, found in bats, has been named HKU5-CoV-2. Studies have indicated that it shares similarities with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. The research was led by renowned virologist Shi Zhengli, who is famous for her extensive work on coronavirus in bats, and was published in the South China Morning Post.

The study, conducted by scientists from institutions like the Guangzhou Laboratory, Guangzhou Academy of Sciences, Wuhan University, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology, has been reviewed and published in Cell Journal. The virus has been identified as belonging to the Merbecovirus genus, which includes the deadly MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) subgroup.

The virus, HKU5-CoV-2, was initially found in Japanese Pipistrelle bats in Hong Kong. According to recent research, scientists warn that HKU5-CoV-2 could spread to humans either directly or through intermediate hosts. While the virus’s ability to infect humans is considered lower than that of COVID-19, it still poses a potential threat.
